YA Series Promo: Demon Underground

I came across the YA Demon Underground series by Parker Blue while looking for new releases - but both of these are out now.

Book Blurb for Bite Me:

Life after high school is tough enough without having to go 15 rounds with your inner demon.

Val Shapiro is just your ordinary, part-demon, teenaged vampire hunter with a Texas drawl. And a pet hellhound named Fang.

Soon enough she finds herself deep in the underbelly of the city, discovering the secrets of the Demon Underground and fighting to save those she loves.

Whether they love her back or not.

And

Book Blurb for Try Me:

This part-demon teen vampire fighter and her faithful terrier hellhound are once again patrolling the dark city streets of San Antonio, Texas.

Val's hunky human partner, Detective Dan Sullivan, is giving her the cold shoulder since she beheaded his vampire ex-fiancée. Vamp leader Alejandro is struggling to keep the peace between vamps, demons and humans. The mucho powerful Encyclopedia Magicka has been stolen, someone in the Demon Underground is poisoning vamps, and Val's inner lust demon, Lola, is getting very restless since Val's now partnered with sexy Shade, the shadow demon with the blond good looks of an angel.

The second book in Parker Blue's Demon Underground urban fantasy series plunges readers deeper into a heady world of passion, friendship, intrigue and mystery.

I might have to give these a try. :) I am so surprised by the volume of YA books that are out there now. :) And they are good - some of them are even great. LOL

Review: Sunrise in a Garden of Love & Evil

Sunrise in a Garden of Love & Evil is the first book in the Bayou Gavotte series by Barbara Monajem and a Love Spell Paranormal Romance.

Book Blurb:

Bayou Gavotte, Louisiana, has a post office, a city hall, and an active PTA. It has magnolias and passion vine. It also has fetish clubs. And vampires.

A flowering hunger....and a taste of violence to come

Being irresistible sucks. Ophelia Beliveau learned that at puberty. When her friends developed breasts, she sprouted fangs as well. The effect on boys was even more dangerous.

Ophelia's peril has only increased. As a woman, there's been only one solution. But she can't avoid men forever. Solitude satisfies no craving, and now her self-imposed exile must end. A vandal has destroyed her garden. A web of blackmail and murder is being woven across town, with her at its heart. And then there's Gideon O'Toole, a detective sworn to uncover more secrets than she thirsts to bare....

Sunrise in a Garden of Love & Evil was an okay read. :)

Ophelia was born a vampire due to a genetic mutation. In her world the only difference between human and vampire are a pair of fangs, a need for blood and an almost irresistible allure.

Due to this allure - Ophelia tries her best to stay away from men. She lives alone on a pretty good sized parcel of land where she has her garden and the supplies she needs to operate her landscaping business.

When Ophelia comes home to a torn up garden she thinks enough is enough and calls in the police - hoping the sight of a squad car in her yard will scare the vandal into staying at his own place and leave Ophelia alone.
Instead of a squad car Ophelia gets Detective Gideon O'Toole and things spiral out of Ophelia's control pretty quickly.

What follows is more vandalism, blackmail and murder - and Ophelia is right in the middle of it all.

Even though the spine on this book says paranormal romance - it is a whodunnit with paranormal elements - because some of the players are vampires. Walking in the sun, baking cookies, planting flowers vampires - but vampires none the less.

I give Sunrise in a Garden of Love & Evil 3 out of 5 stars.

Review: Silver Borne

Silver Borne is the 5th book in the Urban Fantasy Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.

Book Blurb:

Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shape-shifter, never knows what the day - or night - may bring in a world where 'witches, vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters live beside ordinary people'. But she is about to learn that while some secrets are dangerous, those who seek them are just plain deadly...

Mercy is smart enough to realize that when it comes to the magical fae, the less you know, the better. But you can't always get what you want. When she attempts to return a powerful fae book she previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down.

It seems the book contains secrets - and the fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. And if that doesn't take enough of Mercy's attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side - leaving Mercy to cover for him lest his own father declare Samuel's life forfeit.

All in all, Mercy has had better days. and if she isn't careful, she may not have many more...

Silver Borne is a great read. :)

Every day Mercy gets a little better at putting the past behind her and moving on with her life. She likes nothing better than a long day at the garage - working on cars - cars are easier to understand than people. And sometimes, less demanding.

Being the mate to Alpha werewolf Adam Hauptman has brought Mercy an entirely different set of demands. Not everyone in the pack is happy with the status that Mercy has been afforded. Some feel that as a coyote shifter - Mercy does not belong in the werewolf pack.

Mercy is still trying to balance things between herself, Adam and the pack - and now Samuel, one of her best friends, is acting strange. To top it all off, the fae have come calling - and Mercy has to answer to them all.

I give Silver Borne 5 out of 5 stars.

Mailbox Monday

Good Monday morning. Can you believe this is the last Monday in April? Time is just trucking right along. LOL I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. :)

Here is a book I received from pbs.

Book Blurb:

For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art-and he is the city's most accomplished artist.

For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums and learned to judge people quickly - and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint.

But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins' world of dangerous politics and strange magics - and cultivate a flair for death.

Alrighty then. :) Sounds good. Every now and then I like something a little different. I picked this one out because Blodeuedd over at http://books-forlife.blogspot.com/ has been reading them.

Review: City of Souls

City of Souls is the 4th book in Vicki Pettersson's Sign of the Zodiac series - an EOS Fiction.

Book Blurb:

In Sin City, a little girl suffers from a strange and terrible malady. If she dies, the Light will die along with her.

Warrior, avenger, Joanna Archer has survived countless otherworldly terrors - and has found her rightful place among the agents battling the all-pervasive evil of Shadow . . . even as she struggles against the darkness within herself.

A war is raging for Las Vegas - a city without a heart - one that catapults Joanna into a new world hidden from mortal sight. In this lethally seductive alternate dimension the lines blur between good and evil, love and hate, and here lies the last hope for the Light. But Joanna's price of admission is a piece of her own soul - and the odds of her escaping are slim . . . to none.

City of Souls was a good read. :)

Joanna Archer has had it rough - her sister is killed and then Joanna is transformed into the exact image of her dead sister - taking over Olivia's identity in order to protect her own Light identity. Talk about horrible - looking at yourself in the mirror and seeing your murdered sister staring back at you - literally.

And if that is not bad enough - Joanna finds out that the man she thought was her father - is not. Her father is the Tulpa - a being created out of the mind of a mortal and given 'life'. I still have not figured out how this being was able to procreate - but roll with it. :) The Tulpa is the ultimate in evil and he wants Joanna to join him on the Shadow side. So far, he is unaware of Joanna's other identity as Olivia.

Now Joanna has accidentally unbalanced the 'chi' of a changeling - and because of that imbalance the Light is losing ground to the Shadow. Joanna has to set things to right before it is too late.

Warren's answer is for Joanna to visit 'Midheaven' - but nothing in 'Midheaven' is given for free - and Jo is ill prepared to pay the cost.

A couple of situations were resolved in City of Souls - I am glad to say. But a few more cropped up. I have no idea how Joanna is going to get out of the mess she is in right now - or for that matter, if she even wants to.

But I will say this - I have never trusted Warren. I don't doubt that he is for Light - but I think it is on his own terms - and I wonder if he has an ulterior motive.

I give City of Souls 4 out of 5 stars and I'm looking forward to Cheat the Grave out in June of 2010.

Review: Blood Memories

Blood Memories is the first book in the Vampire Memories series by Barb Hendee and a ROC Fantasy.

Book Blurb:

For ages, they have lived among mortal man, surviving in the shadows, hiding their true selves from the eyes of humanity - until now.

Eleisha Clevon is irresistibly pretty - with a mane of golden locks surrounding innocent hazel eyes and the face of a teen angel. But she is no angel. And she's far older than she looks. Like most vampires, she has a special gift. In her case, it's the ability to make men want to care for her. A few even survive the experience. Eleisha doesn't like to kill, but self-preservation comes first.

So when an old friend destroys himself by walking into sunlight right in front of her, Eleisha is shocked. And what she finds afterward points to how very sick of life her friend had become - piling drained corpses in the basement and keeping records of other vampires' real names and addresses. That's a problem.

Because now there are policeman on the case: two very special humans with some gifts of their own. They know who Eleisha is and, even more dangerous, what she is. But Eleisha realizes that being known and understood may have its attractions - even if it puts her and all her kind at risk.

Blood Memories was not my cuppa tea - another case of the book not quite living up to the back blurb.

Eleisha Clevon is over 100 year old - and she still does not know all the ins and outs of being a vampire. That - to me, is silly. How can a being 'live' for over 100 years and still be in the dark - literally - about the why's and what for's of vampireville?

I also didn't connect with the type of vampire she is - no fangs. She must completely rip the throat out of her victim to get to the blood - and that kills them - and gets really messy as well. Also, no preternatural strength - she is only as strong as a mortal woman would be. And the ability she does have is kind of sad.

The policeman Eleisha meets is Wade and he is a psychic psychologist - he is accustomed to being inside people's minds. But he has never had anyone get inside his mind until Eleisha. He becomes fixated - almost stalkerish in his determination to find the woman who was able to get inside his mind.

His partner Dom, on the other hand - has reason's of his own for finding Eleisha - and nothing good comes out of that.

All said - I give Blood Memories 2 out of 5 stars.

Review: Touched by an Alien

Touched by an Alien is the first book in the DAW sci/fi Katherine "Kitty" Katt series by Gini Koch.

Book Blurb:

How can a sexy marketing manager join forces with an Alpha Centauri male in Armani to save the planet-using hairspray, a Mont Blanc pen, and rock n' roll?

Easy...

She's Touched by an Alien

Marketing manager Katherine "Kitty" Katt steps into the middle of what appears to be a domestic dispute turned ugly. And it only gets uglier when the man turns into a winged monster, straight out of a grade-Z horror movie, and goes on a killing spree. Though Kitty should probably run away, she springs into action to take the monster down.

In the middle of the chaos a handsome hunk named Jeff Martini appears, sent by the "agency" to perform crowd control. He's Kitty's kind of guy, no matter what planet he's from. And from now on, for Kitty, things are going to be sexy, dangerous, wild, and out of this world.

Touched by an Alien is a good read. :)

When I read the blurb on the back of the book I thought to myself - this could be fun. And I was right.

Touched by an Alien is full of action, wit, quirky characters, steamy sex and really ugly monsterlike creatures - I had a blast reading it.

Kitty Katt - yes indeed, has lived a fairly normal life - but all of that was shot the day she saw a seemingly average guy transform into a huge monster and start killing people. What amazed Kitty even more than the monster was the fact that she was running towards it with the intent to stop it.

To cap off her day Kitty meets Jeff Martini - a drop dead gorgeous male who just happens to be from another planet. When Jeff and company tell Kitty what is happening and ask for her help Kitty has no choice but to comply - and really, the perks of the job are out of this world.

Touched by an Alien was delightful and I give it 4 out of 5 stars. I can't wait for the next installment - Alien Tango, due out December of 2010.

Book Promo: Rampant by Saskia Walker

Possession is only half the fun.

The moment she arrives at her rented vacation cottage nestled in Scotland, Zoë Daniels feels it - an arousal so powerful she's compelled to surrender to the unusually forceful carnal desires.with nearly anyone who crosses her path. Crawford Logan, the boat builder with the wayward grin. The devilish restaurateur Cain Davot, who seems to know more about Zoë than he lets on. And even her sexy neighbor Grayson Murdoch, whose eyes delve deep into her soul as he explores every inch of her body.

Yet there's something unsettling about the way the locals watch her, something eerie about these overwhelming encounters. Zoë knows she's not quite in control of herself and begins to wonder if there's any truth to the legend of Annabel McGraw, a powerful, promiscuous eighteenth-century witch who once owned the cottage, and whose spirit t is rumored to affect anyone who stays there. Zoë doesn't t believe in anything that even hints at the occult, but t now strange visions are turning frightening.and only y one man's touch can bring her back to earth.

WoW!! This sounds very steamy. :)

Review: Incarceron

Incarceron is the first book in the YA sci-fi/fantasy series Incarceron by Catherine Fisher.

Book Blurb:

Incarceron -- a futuristic prison, sealed from view, where the descendants of the original prisoners live in a dark world torn by rivalry and savagery.

It is a terrifying mix of high technology -- a living building which pervades the novel as an ever-watchful, ever-vengeful character, and a typical medieval torture chamber -- chains, great halls, dungeons.

A young prisoner, Finn, has haunting visions of an earlier life, and cannot believe he was born here and has always been here.

In the outer world, Claudia, daughter of the Warden of Incarceron, is trapped in her own form of prison -- a futuristic world constructed beautifully to look like a past era, an imminent marriage she dreads. She knows nothing of Incarceron, except that it exists.

But there comes a moment when Finn, inside Incarceron, and Claudia, outside, simultaneously find a device -- a crystal key, through which they can talk to each other.

And so the plan for Finn's escape is born !

Incarceron is a pretty good read. :)

Finn lives inside Incarceron - he does not remember a time when he was not there - but he has flashes, pictures of things that do not exist in Incrceron - and that makes him think he was once Outside.

Claudia lives Outside - she is the Warden's daughter - and in her world Protocol is observed. This means that her world, her mannerisms, her daily life - is patterned after a time that is considered to be more genteel.

But there are some people who are not happy with Protocol - some people who would see the Queen displaced and another upon the throne - someone who would do away with Protocol and let Time run its course.

I have to admit that Incarceron held my attention. I was fascinated by the world Ms. Fisher has created - and thoroughly enjoyed this read.

If I had to compare the world of Incarceron - it would be to that of The Hunger Games - I got much the same feel from both books.

I give Incarceron 4 out of 5 stars and look forward to the sequel - Sapphique.

Personal Post - Senior Prom 2010!!

Okay - I know this is a book blog. LOL But I had to share this picture of our beautiful daughter, Breana and her prom date, Justin. Breana is a senior and will be graduating in May. I just can't believe she is all grown up. :)

Breana will be attending college in the fall, majoring in English with gifted certification. She will be teaching English/Creative Writing/Literature to high school students. :)

I would like to say that I am so very proud of the person she is - and thank the Lord everyday for allowing her (and her brother) to be a part of my life. I think her father and I have done an amazing job with our children - because they are amazing people. :)

Thank you for taking the time to read a mother's ramble....

Review: Mind Games

Mind Games is the first book in the Justine Jones Urban Fantasy series by Carolyn Crane.

Book Blurb:

JUSTINE KNOWS SHE'S GOING TO DIE. ANY SECOND NOW.

Justine Jones has a secret. A hardcore hypochondriac, she's convinced a blood vessel is about to burst in her brain. Then, out of the blue, a startlingly handsome man named Packard peers into Justine's soul and invites her to join his private crime-fighting team. It's a once-in-a-lifetime deal. With a little of Packard's hands-on training, Justine can weaponize her neurosis, turning it outward on Midcity's worst criminals, and finally get the freedom from fear she's always craved. End of problem.

Or is it? In Midcity, a dashing police chief is fighting a unique breed of outlaw with more than human powers. And while Justine's first missions, including one against a nymphomaniac husband-killer, are thrilling successes, there is more to Packard than meets the eye. Soon, while battling her attraction to two very different men, Justine is plunging deeper into a world of wizardry, eroticism, and cosmic secrets. With Packard's help, Justine has freed herself from her madness - only to discover a reality more frightening than anyone's worst fears.

I really wanted to like this book. The back blurb sounds intriguing - an all new take on crime fighting - harnessing ones mental instability and projecting it onto criminals in order to bring them to justice.

But I have to be honest - I only made it to page 150 before putting Mind Games down and walking away.

I did not connect with the characters at all and the story proved not my cup of tea.

What I did read was well written and the cover is wonderful.

I do have a question for those who read the entire book: Does Justine ever use a knife? I was wondering because the lady on the front cover is holding a knife.

Mind Games was a DNF.

Author Interview and Giveaway: MK Mancos

Today I am very pleased to introduce MK Mancos - writing under the names MK Mancos, Kathleen Scott and Kate Davison - she is the author of a number of books, including:

The Host: ShadowsBy a Silken ThreadScythe

MK Mancos began her storytelling about the same time she acquired language skills.

When faced with nightmares as a child, the pediatrician instructed her mother to read her stories before bed. But being the precocious child she was, she wanted nothing but unadulterated tales by the Brothers Grimm. The battle raged between MK and her mother over suitable bedtime material, until MK was forced to begin telling herself tales before going to sleep. Thus began the lifelong love of books, stories, and lives not her own.

After living for years in the Midwest and Deep South, MK now resides in New Jersey with her wonderful husband, Dave, and a feisty dog named, Lily.

Welcome to MBB and thank you for taking time out of your schedule to answer a few questions.

Thanks for having me here, Michelle. I love talking about writing and books. It's my favorite topic.

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Telling you about myself is a little trickier. First of all, I'm the luckiest woman alive. I've been married to my best friend, Dave, for 17 years. He's also creatively inclined. He's a comics writer, artist and now training for voice over work. Our home life is never dull. We laugh constantly. Commiserate frequently. I can go to him to bounce ideas off and he get's it. We are both rabid sci-fi geeks and documentary junkies. We also have a passion for British Sitcoms. I've worked in the allied healthcare field for about 20 years, and while I can write the hell out of a trauma scene, I don't think I could ever write an entire book set in a hospital, though I've learned to never say never.

2. Your books span several genre's, with themes of science, sorcery and sex - is your writing process different for each genre?

My process variations have more to do with a story's length than the genre. If I'm writing a novella, I very rarely, if ever, plot things out ahead of time. I might know roughly where I'm going, but not necessarily how I'm going to get there. If I'm working on a novel, I plot and work from loose outlines. (What I call a prose outline). I may or may not stick to the outline, but it helps to know if I have enough material to work into an full-length book.

When I comes to genres, I can switch pretty quickly without problem. I write about four or five titles at a time, spanning from erotic sci-fi to category romantic suspense. If I get stuck on one story during a writing session, I switch to another. I've often had people ask me how I keep from getting the situations confused. To me, it's easy because the books are so different, the situations and charaters' goals so varied that it's not difficult. What I do find sometimes is sitting with the cursor blinking at me while I try to remember the character's name. : )

3. Do you have a particular writing space and routine?

I'm lucky enough to have my own office in my home. My husband's office is upstairs, so we really aren't in each other's space when we write. We do have an unspoken agreement though, once it's time for dinner and relaxation, we adjourn to the living room and work in there. Even if just to be in the same room. It seems to work for us. I love my office, but for some reason this spring, I'm finding it hard to write in it. (I think because my desktop computer died and I'm using my laptop for everything.) Being more portable and the weather being as lovely as it is right now, I want to take the dogs outside, sit on the porch and enjoy the outdoors while I work. Actually, that kind of works better since there are less distractions outside. I can pretty much tune out the neighborhood and just listen to the music of the birds and insects. Love it.

4. Where do you find your inspiration?

Anywhere and everywhere. I might see a documentary that sparks my interest. I might read an article in a magazine (Scientific American, Archeology, and Fate Magazine are all gold mines of ideas.) I also have very vivid and real dreams I can pick through. My novel Immorati (available now from Wild Rose Press/Black Rose) came from such a dream. I have ideas for a romantic suspense triology that came from a tiny snippet in a dream that had to do with seeing lights blinding the driver in a rearview mirror. Such a little thing to get a three book idea from! I think finding inspiration is mostly about hearing or seeing something, reading a blurb in an article and finding a kernal you can blow up into your own idea. Just take it and run it like a kite caught in the wind. Let it fly. I read an article once in a women's mag about a woman whose husband told her on their anniversary that he had fallen in love and wanted to have an affair with another woman, only to find out the woman in question was a lesbian. So, the affair was a no go. He decided he needed his wife's forgiveness and then proceeded to tell wife what was wrong with her. The poor woman was devastated. She got up from the table and left...but ultimately took the joker back. I read that, slapped my forehead and said, "Oh, no. No. No. No." - That night I wrote down an idea where a woman goes through similar, but her revenge on her faithless spouse is to divorce the man and have a very passionate affair with a younger man. I turned the wounded kitten into a cougar. Rawr! That's the way the story should have ended.

5. Are you a reader in your free time and who are your must reads?

I'm an avid reader across several genres. Right now, I'm going through my shelves, bags and boxes (I have books tucked everywhere) and reading the books I've had for years and never quite got to. For must reads, I hit Jayne Ann Krentz, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Julie Garwood, Linda Howard, Elizabeth Lowell.

6. What are you working on now?

Right now, I'm working on a fantasy/sci-fi erotic romance, titled Bad Religion. The full was requested by Loose-ID. A sequel to my Samhain release, High Octane, titled Water Mark. A sequel to my Liquid Silver soon-to-be-released, Private Negotitations, titled, Intimate Weapons, and the sequel to my Samhain novel, The Host: Shadows, titled, The Host: Bloodlust. I'm hoping to finish the sequel to Immorati, titled Corpesetti within the next few months, and begin the sequel to Scythe titled, Second-Hand Death. - My plate is full, but I still have other stories I'm working on here and there. Ones I need to tweak and get sent out other places. I don't think I could ever work on only one book, I think my head might explode if I tried.

As you can see, Ms. Mancos is one busy lady - but that just gives us readers more books to read and enjoy. :)

Ms. Mancos has generously offered one commenter his or her choice of book from those books she has written. Be sure to leave your email address - as I will be forwarding that email address to Ms. Mancos. For a sneak peek at the titles Ms. Mancos has available stop by her web sites:

Good morning everyone. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. :) Sadly, I did not pick up any new books over the weekend - but here is one I received from pbs.

Book Blurb:

They were destined to save the world from an ancient evil.

Talos is a magic wielder, born into the mage guild of firecrafters. As an agent of the Overworld Police, he has come from a secret land to protect Earth from magicians intent on enslaving humanity.

Mila has always had the gift of healing. But this very modern woman never realized that her skill was born of an ancient magic that only firecraft can fully unlock.

Together, Tal and Mila discover that the source of their powers is in unity. Love's shining light might burn them alive protecting the magic of the world, but if the Tree of Life dies, and all the magic in the world is extinguished ... will it matter?

Hmmm, something different. :)

Friday Finds: The Onic Empire Series

Check out these little gems I found today...The Onic Empire series by Anitra Lynn McLeod.

Between duty and desire lies a season of pure pleasure...

Welcome to the world of the Harvester—a warrior bound to take virginity, but never pleasure—and the servant who exists to prepare him for his role. For them, sex equals duty. Until the rules fall aside...and pleasure takes over...

Sweet Release

For Chur, a year's preparation comes down to the single day on which he encounters a succession of exquisitely adorned young virgins. One thrust from Chur frees the women to find their perfect mates...yet he is forbidden to enjoy his work. But Chur's third Harvest changes everything, for the final virgin is none other than his paratanist, a loyal servant who reveals herself to be a startlingly sensuous woman. Enovese has desired her master since she first laid hands upon him, but her scheme to free them both is complicated by Chur's prideful resistance. Until the Harvester declares Enovese his bondmate, they must maintain a dangerous charade of master and slave. But Chur is determined that Enovese pay for her deception—with delicious, teasing torture all the more pleasurable for being taboo...

And Due Out May 1st

To be a Harvester is to exist with pain that should be pleasure and desire bound by duty. Until one who can spark a change meets the perfect mate. Now he needs only to convince her--one shattering climax at a time. . .

Rebellion

Harvester Sterlave of Gant knows his mission: initiate all the virgins of the season and choose a bondmate from among them. The one he selects is perfect, both physically and politically--she is, after all, the empress's daughter. Kasmiri, however, has other ideas. She wanted to be chosen by Sterlave's best friend, Chur, who instead rebelled by selecting a mere servant girl! Kasmiri knows she now must submit to Sterlave--although she doesn't have to like it. . .

But Kasmiri soon realizes she more than likes Sterlave's sensual attentions. A man like no other, Sterlave is a warrior who satisfies her deepest physical needs, even as he strives to win her heart. . .

Whew!! These sound steamy. :) Has anyone read them? Details please! :)

Have a wonderful weekend.

Review: The Mage in Black.

The Mage in Black is the 2nd book in the Sabina Kane series by Jaye Wells.

Book Blurb:

Sabina Kane doesn't have the best track record when it comes to family. After all, her own grandmother, leader of the vampire race, wants her dead.

So when she arrives in New York to meet her mage relatives, the reunion puts the fun in dysfunctional. Not only is mage culture completely bizarre, but everyone seems to think she's some kind of 'Chosen' who'll unite the dark races.

Sabina doesn't care who chose her, she's not into destiny. But the mages aren't Sabina's only problem.

In New York's Black Light District, she has run-ins with fighting demons, hostile werewolves and an opportunistic old flame.

Sabina thought she'd take a bite out of the Big Apple - but it looks like it wants to bite back.

I love this series and Sabina Kane rocks!!

In Red Headed StepChild Sabina is confronted with the fact that her grandmother - Alpha Dominae - is a nasty piece of work. And not in a good way. Deciding that being an assassin for the Dominae is not all it's cracked up to be - and having lost faith in her grandmother and everything she had been taught her entire life - Sabina heads to New York - to see how the other half lives.

Sabina has just learned that she has a sister - a twin sister - who was raised by the mages - the Dominae's dreaded enemy and in The Mage in Black Sabina meets her.

Once inside the mage stronghold Sabina is overwhelmed by the welcome her sister offers her - and not at all surprised by the suspicion offered from the other mages.

But someone does not want Sabina to have a happy family reunion with her sister - and trying to find out who is responsible for the recent unrest among dark kind - while keeping her own neck safe - may prove too hard for even the best trained assassin.

Sabina is one kick ass lady. I absolutely love this series!!

I give The Mage in Black 5 out of 5 stars and I can't wait for the next installment - Green Eyed Demon - due out March 2011.

Review: Don't Kill the Messenger

Don't Kill the Messenger is a novel by Eileen Rendahl.

Book Blurb:

The first in a fantastic new paranormal series about a messenger from the supernatural underworld.

Melina Markowitz is a Messenger, a go-between for paranormal forces and supernatural creatures. Problem is, when a girl's a go-between, it's hard not to get caught in the middle...

When ninjas steal an envelope from Melina, her search leads her to a Taoist temple in Old Sacramento, where the priests seem to practice Zen and the art of mayhem. Melina learns from the handsome ER doctor (and vampire) who gave her the envelope that it contained talismans created by the priests to control Chinese vampires, who are attacking gang members to spark a street war.

Although he may look more like a surfer than a cop, Ted Goodnight is dead serious about investigating the surge in gang violence. At every turn he runs into Melina, a very attractive-and very mysterious-young woman. Can Melina enlist his help to battle something he doesn't even believe in without blowing her cover?

Don't Kill the Messenger was an okay read.

After a near death experience as a three year old - Melina has been able to see things that other people can't see - and those things/beings want her to help them. Help them by delivering messages or parcels to other beings like them.

When a vampire asks Melina to deliver an envelope to another vampire Melina questions why - usually she only delivers between beings that don't like each other and therefore need a go between. But her job is Messenger and she has to deliver the package in a timely manner or suffer the consequences.

It is right along here that I did a complete WTH? Chinese vampires, Latino gang members, grow houses?

I lost interest very quickly and started skimming.

I love the idea of a Messenger - a go between for paranormal beings - and Melina is a pretty cool gal. But this story line was just too bizarre and not in a good way - it did not hold my interest.

When I read - the story unfolds in my mind like a movie...that may sound weird, but for me - books are movies in my head. LOL Don't Kill the Messenger was a very cheesy kung-fu movie in my head.

I give Don't Kill the Messenger 3 out of 5 stars.

Review: Eternal

Eternal is the first book in the Clare Point series by V K Forrest.

Book Blurb:

Centuries ago, the shipwrecked vampire clan known as the Kahills came ashore on the sleepy Delaware peninsula of Clare's Point. In Eternal, V.K. Forrest introduces readers to the ravishing, undead Fia Kahill, an FBI agent, who's in danger from a vampire slayer--and the one man she must resist but can't...

Eternal

FBI agent Fia Kahill has just learned her cousin Bobby McCathal is dead. His body is found burned, and his head and hands are missing--the unmistakable calling card of a vampire slayer. When more vampires' corpses surface, Fia knows it's only a matter of time before the killer catches up to her. But that's not her only worry. She's been assigned to work with FBI agent Glen Duncan who is the spitting image of Ian, the man she once loved--and the man who betrayed her...

Four hundred years ago, Ian used his relationship with Fia to infiltrate the clan and kill as many of them as he could. Fia promised herself she would never make the mistake of loving a human again. With the murders in Clare Point escalating, Fia has no choice but to trust Glen even as her promise is becoming more difficult to keep. Fia wants Glen like no other man she's ever desired--and before she knows what's happening, she is deeply immersed in a forbidden love affair. But this time the consequences could be far graver than Fia ever could have imagined. For a killer has her in his sights as his next deadly victim...

Eternal is a pretty good read.

The spine on the book says Zebra Paranormal Romance...but that is a bit misleading - seeing as how there is not a great deal of romance in the book. As a matter of fact - there are only a handful of sex scenes and they are of the vanilla variety.

I would say Eternal is a Paranormal Whodunnit - and that is fine. I really enjoy whodunnits - and especially if they have a paranormal element.

The small ocean town of Clare Point is home to a clan of vampires - has been their home for hundreds of years. Most everyone in town is related to each other in one way or another - and several of them are members of the sept - the governing body of the Kahill vampires.

Though the main trade in Clare Point is tourism - the vampires try not to mingle with humans any more than necessary: which means any kind of relationship with a human is strictly forbidden. Fia Kahill has not had any trouble with this restriction for years - due to the fact that the last human she loved ended up killing several members of her family.

But now she is partnered with Glen Duncan - who is the spitting image of her dead lover Ian - and she can't control the attraction she feels for him - even while trying to solve the murders of several Clare Point residents.

I enjoyed Eternal. Ms. Forrest has her own take on the vampire lore and it made for a pretty good read.

I give Eternal 3 out of 5 stars and I will be picking up the next two books in this series.
