BloodRing

This is the first book in the Neomage series by Faith Hunter.

Book Blurb:

As humanity struggles with religious strife and seraphs and demons fight a never-ending battle, a new species has arisen. "Neomages" are human in appearance, but able to twist left-over creation energy to their will. A threat to both humans and seraphs, they are confined in luxurious Enclaves.

Thorn St. Croix is no ordinary neomage. Nearly driven insane by her powers, she is smuggled out of an Enclave and now lives among humans, channeling her gift of stone-magery into jewelry making. But when Thaddeus Bartholomew, a dangerously attractive policeman, tells her that her ex-husband has been kidnapped, Thorn risks revealing her identity to find him. And for Thorn, the punishment for revelation is death.

I am torn with this book. It was a good story - with action and suspense. But see the above book blurb, this is not the blurb on the back of the book - so I did not know about the religious undertones. I don't like to read books that may go against my personal beliefs and I can't tell with this book where some of the more subtle characters fall.

I have the next book in the series and I will read it - that may give me a better perspective on things.

So I guess -because of my own ambiguity - I give this book 2 and 1/2 stars.

Kiss of a Demon King

This is the 6th book in The Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole and the story of Rydstrom and Sabine.

Book Blurb:
For centuries, Rydstrom, fallen king of the Rage Demons, has fought to seize his crown, never relenting, until he is tricked into the lair of a exquisite enchantress. If she can tempt him to her bed, everything he's worked for will be lost. Sabine the Sorceress of Illusions has long accepted her fate: to seduce a demon king. But once she kisses the brutal warrior, she realizes seduction is far from the punishment she'd feared. Yet just when they begin to fall for each other, one will be forced to make the ultimate sacrifice. Will Sabine give up the only life she knows to save her demon? Or will the proud king lay down his crown and arms to keep his sorceress...?

Awesome book!!! This is one of my top 5 series and Kresley Cole is an awesome writer - she has created the world of Lore kind and it is full of things that go bump in the night (and shockingly, a lot of them are hot). If you have not tried this series I really think you should - it has it all - action, humor, great story and steamy sex. :)

I give this book and the entire series 5 out of 5 stars. :)

Kiss of Fury

This is the 2nd book in the Dragonfire series by Deborah Cooke and the story of Donovon and Alex.

Book Blurb:

Alexandra Madison has discovered an invention that could change the world. When her partner is murdered and their lab destroyed, Alex knows she has to rebuild her prototype in time...

Donovan Shea knows the Madison project is of dire importance to the ongoing Pyr/Slayer war. So when he sees Alex being followed by a Slayer, he reacts and defends her, never imagining that she's his destined mate...

As Slayers close in on their prey, Donovan knows he'll surrender his life to protect Alex - and lose his heart to possess her...

I really like this series. I like the concept of ages old men that can turn into dragons - called the Pyr -with the purpose of protecting humans from the ages old men who can turn into dragons - called the Slayers.

Slayers were once Pyr - they have turned there backs on goodness and decided that the world would be better off without humans - and without other Pyr. They try to kill the Pyr and any mate they may have so that the Pyr can not continue.

This is a good series and it started off with a bang in Kiss of Fate - the story of Quinn and Sara.

I give this book and the series so far a 4 out of 5 stars. :)

Fish out of Water

This is the 3rd book in the Fred the Mermaid trilogy by Mary Janice Davidson.

Book Blurb:

Fred the mermaid has taken the bait and chosen Artur, Prince of the Black Sea, over human marine biologist Thomas. And just in time. The existence of the Undersea Folk is no longer a secret, and someone needs to keep them from floundering in the media spotlight. Fred has all the right skills for the job, but not for when her real father surfaces and tries to overthrow Artur's regime. However, as civil war threatens to sink the merfolk, Fred can't stop thinking about the landlubber she left behind...

I loved this book - all 3 books as a matter of fact. I didn't realize until this book that it was a trilogy and this was the last one. I love Fred's character and all the supporting characters as far as that goes. I hate to see this series end. If you haven't picked up these books - I highly recommend them. :) They are fast paced, quick reads with great humor and wit.

I give this book and the whole series 5 out of 5 stars. :)

'A Rush of Wings'

This is the first book in the Dante series by Adrian Phoenix.

Book Blurb:

HIS NAME IS DANTE.

Dark. Talented. Beautiful. Star of the rock band Inferno. Rumored owner of the hot New Orleans nightspot Club Hell. Born of the Blood, then broken by an evil beyond imagination.

HIS PAST IS A MYSTERY.

F.B.I. Special Agent Heather Wallace has been tracking a sadistic serial murderer known as the Cross Country Killer, and the trail has led her to New Orleans, Club Hell, and Dante. But the dangerously attractive musician not only resists her investigation, he claims to be "nightkind": in other words, a vampire. Digging into his past for answers reveals little. A juvenile record a mile long. No social security number. No known birth date. In and out of foster homes for most of his life before being taken in by a man named Lucien DeNoir, who appears to guard mysteries of his own.

HIS FUTURE IS CHAOS.

What Heather does know about Dante is that something links him to the killer -- and she's pretty sure that link makes him the CCK's next target. Heather must unravel the truth about this sensual, complicated, vulnerable young man -- who, she begins to believe, may indeed be a vampire -- in order to finally bring a killer to justice. But Dante's past holds a shocking, dangerous secret, and once it is revealed not even Heather will be able to protect him from his destiny...

This was a different read for me. I guess if I had to describe it - I would call it a paranormal thriller. We had vamps, a fallen angel, the FBI, a psycho serial killer and a psycho vamp FBI agent. LOL

I did enjoy this book as somewhat of a departure from the usual paranormal romance books I read and I look forward to the sequel. :)

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

"Nightlife"

This is the first book in the Cal and Niko Leandros series by Rob Thurman.

Book Blurb:

In New York, there's a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and a beautiful vampire in a penthouse on the Upper East Side. Of course, most humans are oblivious to this, but Cal Leandros is only half-human. His father's dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares-and he and his entire otherworldly race are after Cal.

He and his half-brother Niko have managed to stay a step ahead for three years, but now Cal's dad has found them again. And Cal is about to learn why they want him, why they've always wanted him...

I had a hard time getting into this book. I bought it based on the book blurb - cause it sounds like a winner - but it really wasn't. I'm not sure if it is because this is the first book in the series and so much had to be set up or if it is because the main characters are guys instead of butt kicking girls. LOL

There is butt kicking in this book - but there is also a lot of silly, cliched, back and forth bantering between the two brothers.

To give it credit - it was not a horrible read. It had it's moments and I did laugh at some of the bantering. It just seemed like it was trying too hard - and the author threw in every funny quip she could think of.

I'm not sure if I will read the next one in the series.

I give this book a 2 out of 5 stars. :)

Midnight's Daughter

This is the first book in the Dorina Basarab, Dhampir series by Karen Chance.

Book Blurb:

Dorina Basarab is a dhampir - half-human, half-vampire. Unlike most dhampirs, though, Dory has managed to maintain her sanity. Now Dory's vampire father has come to her for help - again. Her Uncle Dracula (yes, the Dracula), cruelest among vampires, has escaped his prison. And her father wants Dory to work with gorgeous master vampire Louis-Cesare to put him back there.

Although Dory prefers to work alone, Dracula is the only thing that truly scares her - and when she has to face him, she'll take all the help she can get.

I've read the Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance and if you are familiar with that series, you will be surprised by this one - especially when you find out who Dory's Dad is. LOL

Dory is a tough, no nonsense kind of gal, dhampir aside. Being shunned by the supernatural world - they consider her to be a mistake that should not have survived the first moments of birth - Dory is naturally a loner and considering the dhampir rages that sometimes overtake her, that is a good thing. Vampires hate and fear her, with good reason - she hunts and kills them (only the bad ones) and because of who her father is - well that can sometimes pose a problem......

I really enjoyed this book and hope that Ms. Chance is going to make a series out of it. It is fast paced and full of action with an awesome butt kicking main character. I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. :)

Magic to the Bone

This is the first book in the Allie Beckstrom series by Devon Monk.

Book Blurb:

Using magic means it uses you back - and every spell exacts a price from the user. Some people, however, get out of it by Offloading the cost of magic onto an innocent, then Allison Beckstrom's job is to identify the spell-caster. Allie would rather live a hand-to-mouth existence than accept the family fortune and the strings that come with it, but when she finds a boy dying from a magical Offload that has her father's signature all over it she is thrown back into the world of his black magic.

This was my first book by Devon Monk and it was a pretty good read. She has a unique take on magic - the use of magic and the consequences of that use. The main character in the book, Allie, is strong and independent - not afraid to stand up for what's right, no matter who she's facing.

I look forward the next book in the series. :) I give Magic to the Bone 3 out of 5 stars.

Finished 'Succubus Dreams'.

This is the third book in the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead.

Book Blurb:

Some days, a girl just can't catch a break...especially when the girl in question is Georgina Kincaid, a shape-shifting succubus who gets her energy from seducing men. First there's her relationship with gorgeous bestselling writer Seth Mortensen, which is unsatisfying on a number of levels. It's not just that they can't have sex in case Georgina inadvertently kills him (generally a turn-off for most guys). Lately, even spending time together is a challenge.Seth's obsessed with finishing his latest novel, and Georgina's under demonic orders to mentor the new (and surprisingly inept) succubus on the block. Then there are the dreams. Someone, or something, is preying on Georgina at night, draining her energy, and supplying eerie visions of her future. Georgina seeks answers from Dante, a dream interpreter with ties to the underworld, but his flirtatious charm only leaves her more confused - especially as the situation with Seth reaches crisis point. Now Georgina faces a double challenge - rein in her out-of-control love life, and go toe-to-toe with an enemy capable of wreaking serious havoc among mankind. Otherwise, Georgina, and the entire mortal world, may never sleep easy again...

I really liked this book. Georgina may be a minion of Hell - but she is basically a likable person. LOL She does what she has to in order to stay alive, sometimes she even feels bad about taking energy from guys, especially the good ones. Georgina seems to want what every woman wants - stability and someone to love. But it comes with a price. Can she pay that price? Is she even willing?

I have enjoyed the whole series and would suggest you give it a try. I give this book and the series 4 out of 5 stars. :)
